![]() ![]() These are sensitive encounters with everyday and extraordinary places all over the globe which Baan has put together to form an engaged commentary on human living and survival strategies. ![]() The exhibition features 52 photographs from last year accompanied by personally spoken commentaries by the photographer. A characteristic of his pictorial language is the engagement with the close relationship between humans and architecture, between social use and the various spatial situations. In the meantime he is influencing “our image of architecture like no other” (Süddeutsche Zeitung) and is working very successfully worldwide for architects including, for example, Rem Koolhas, Herzog & de Meuron, Toyo Ito or Zaha Hadid. Iwan Baan was already represented at the Marta Herford in the exhibition “Richard Neutra in Europe” (2010) with several striking building pictures. In his project “52 Weeks, 52 Cities” developed exclusively for Marta Herford, Iwan Baan takes the viewer on a one-year photographic journey around the world – always on the lookout for ingenious homes in unexpected places and outstanding construction projects. 52 Weeks, 52 Cities Photographies by Iwan Baan ![]()

![]() ![]() Siege and Storm was enjoyable sequel to Shadow and Bone that revolved around Alina and Mal’s life on the run, their struggling relationship, Darkling on their tail, and Ravka’s situation making things complicated. Previous book I read in Shadow and Bone Trilogy Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her–or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm. ![]() ![]() But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling’s game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. She can’t outrun her past or her destiny for long. She finds starting new is not easy while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This creates a fantastic atmosphere, which is perfect for this story about a small village that survives in perfect health due to the sacrifice of their best boy to the local forest god every seven years.īut the plot isn’t what I’m here to talk about today, it’s the three central characters and their relationship. Strange Grace is a bit of an odd book, but of course that worked for me since I’m a bit odd myself! There’s a neat trick with the prose where it leaves out just enough exposition to where you’re not sure if you missed something or if you’re living in some sort of wild fever dream. And so today I’m going to talk a little bit about Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton! (Gosh, was it just January that I posted my review of this? That feels like a million years ago already…) When I saw this prompt I immediately thought of a book I read last year which I loved for a few different reasons, but mainly for how it resolved its love triangle. Today’s prompt is ‘the best things come in threes’ – ‘fave trilogies or books with three central characters’. Hello! This month I’m taking part in Wyrd & Wonder, celebrating all things fantastic! Throughout the month there are a number of challenges or prompts and I’ll be taking some of those on here at Way Too Fantasy to join in the fun. ![]() IMAGE CREDITS: Flaming phoenixby Sujono Sujono | Decorative phoenixby Tanantachai Sirival – both from ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It got turned into a major Broadway musical and cemented Maguire’s reputation as a writer who turns traditional fairytales onto their heads. And Maguire’s first book didn’t do anything to alleviate the humdrum nature of the kingdom of Oz.Īnyway, most everyone tends to associate Maguire with Wicked, which tells the story of the Wizard of Oz from the sympathetic viewpoint of the Wicked Witch of the West. Maybe it was the insertion of the Wizard who ends up being from Dorothy’s time and kills the sense of fantasy, or the fact that her adventure was just a dream. Maybe it was the lack of a true princess trapped in a castle somewhere. It was, I don’t know, too American somehow? For me, the trappings of a fairy tale require a sense of magical realism that, for all that it was set in Oz and the Emerald City, etc., TWOZ just did not have. I can’t really say why, other than I’ve never really thought of The Wizard of Oz as a fairy tale. I will probably get a barrage of hate mail when I say this, but I kinda thought Wicked by Gregory Maguire sucked. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Stream It Or Skip It: 'First Five' On Max, A Docuseries About Finland's Youngest-Ever Prime Minister And The Female Members Of Her CabinetĪnthony Ramos Tells Sherri Shepherd He Got Laid Off The Very Same Day He Was Cast In ‘Hamilton’: “You Gotta Have Faith” Pam Grier Told Sherri Shepherd Why It Was Important She Appeared Nude in 'Coffy' and 'Foxy Brown': "We Have to Find Confidence in Our Beauty" Michael Shannon Talks Navigating 'The Flash' and Directorial Debut 'Eric LaRue' in the Same Week: "The Flash Isn't Really My Parade" 'The Idol' Episode 2 Recap: Dancing with Myself ![]() Wes Anderson Stands by Bill Murray Amidst Misconduct Allegations and Explains His Absence From 'Asteroid City'īen Affleck and Matt Damon Shut Down Donald Trump's Use Of 'Air' Monologue In Campaign Video: "We Do Not Grant Such Consent" Stream It Or Skip It: 'The Wonder Weeks' on Netflix, a Dutch Parenting Comedy Kristen Stewart's Next Project Is a "Stoner Girl Comedy" With Fiancée Dylan Meyer: "It's Really F**king Stupid"Ĭan 'The Full Monty' Lightning Strike Twice? ![]() Stream It Or Skip It: 'The Full Monty' On FX/Hulu, An Unfocused Sequel Series To The 1997 Film LGBT Film Festival Loses Corporate Sponsor’s Public Support Ahead of 2023 Pride Programming: “Parts of Our Country Don’t Want Us Raising Our Voices” Treat Williams Showed All Parents of Gay Children How to Love Their Kids in ‘The Christmas House’ Let’s Get Loud! 7 Movies to Stream on Netflix in Celebration of Pride Month 2023ħ LGBTQ+ TV Shows to Stream in Honor of Pride Month 2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() To say I was absolutely afire to get my hands on this book is putting it mildly – the reveal at the end of Deadline was such an amazing tease for Blackout – and so I dived into this story with the highest of expectations. With too much left to do and not much time left to do it in, the surviving staff of After the End Times must face mad scientists, zombie bears, rogue government agencies-and if there’s one thing they know is true in post-zombie America, it’s this:īlackout is the conclusion to the epic trilogy that began in the Hugo-nominated Feed and the sequel, Deadline.Īt long last, the third and final book of the Newsflesh trilogy has arrived. I gave up on Clarke’s earlier novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell – not just gave up, but gave it up, donating it to the book sale after a couple of failed attempts to get into it. ![]() By training and inclination I am (more or less) a realist the two genres I always have the least success with reading are fantasy and science fiction. Piranesi is a strange, wondrous, mysterious novel, the kind of book that makes me marvel that someone ever had the idea to write it, much less carried it out so that a reader like me could be moved and transported by it. I note with precision the doors I must pass through, the rights and lefts that I must take, the statues on the walls that I must pass. I imagine I am walking the path from the vestibule to the hall. When this world becomes too much for me, when I grow tired of the noise and the dirt and the people, I close my eyes and I name a particular vestibule to myself then I name a hall. In my mind are all the halls, the endless procession of them, the intricate pathways. ![]() In my mind are all the tides, their seasons, their ebbs and their flows. ![]() ![]() Lewis George Orwell Mary Pope Osborne LeUyen Pham Dav Pilkey Roger Priddy Rick Riordan J. The story had plenty of twists to it but probably could have been a bit longer as the end felt a tad rushed but overall I enjoyed this one and would recommend checking it out. As I mentioned it does have a younger feel to it then a lot of young adult but a bit too graphic really for middle grade. ![]() I personally thought The Fade was a wonderfully creepy tale and perfect to read this time of year.
